Overview
Concept
Sonoma Mountain Village is a 200 acre green community which will be constructed on the site of an old technology campus. The project will begin construction in late 2009 and last for the next twelve years. Once completed, the community will feature 1,900 homes and over 4,000 jobs at the over 500,000 square feet of commercial, retail and office space!
"A 5-Minute Lifestyle" is the what Sonoma Mountain Village is looking to provide to each of its residents. Presumably, this means that all of ones daily necessities will be within 5 minutes of ones home. Sonoma will look to accomplish this through intelligent neighborhood design and the inclusion of all of ones necessities in a central and convenient location. Much of the neighborhood activity will revolve around the Village Square, which will include restaurants, bars, a post office, a grocery store, and even a movie theater among many others.
Sustainability is priority number one when it comes to home and community design at Sonoma. Although specific building standards have not been released yet, Sonoma commits that each structure will be built at the highest possible level of efficiency. Some of the features that we know about are:
- Home frames will be made from recycled steel in an onsite solar power factory. Each home will use the equivalent of 6 recycled SUV's, saving approx 40 trees.
- The commercial centers will be powered by photovoltaic panels, which will produce excess power and be sold back to the grid
- The current structures covering the community will be recycled and reused to the fullest extent possible
Neighborhoods
Community parks and gardens have been strategically placed so that they are no more than a 2 minute walk from any home. Miles of walking and bike paths wind throughout the community. They are surrounded by edible landscape, so you can reenergize along the way. The neighborhoods feature electric recharging stations for shared cars.
Homes
Sonoma Mountain Village will be composed of 1,900 homes when completed. The community will be mixed-income and have 900 apartments, lofts and condos and 1000 single family homes. All single family homes will feature alley loaded garages, making the front of the home a social focal point.
Getting Around
A newly passed light rail system will be located within a 15 minute walk of the community. This rail system will offer access to key services along with other public transit. Sonoma State University is located only one mile from the community.
