Overview
Concept:
Aqua Tower is an 82 Story Mixed-use residential skyscraper which will certainly become one of the best known sustainable buildings in the world. The building will be home to a mixture of apartments, hotel rooms, and 264 condos. Retail and office space is planned for the lower floors as well.
The design is daring to say the least. The buildings name, Aqua, is probably due to the proximity to Lake Michigan and it is in line with other aquatically name buildings in the area. The esthetic look of the building itself can easily be seen as resembling ripples or waves in water. The design is not without purpose however. The flowing shape is due to balconies that curve out of the building in a different design on each floor.
The amenities at the building are top of the line. Share amenities include a lounge, party room, theater, business center, library and many more. The buildings base will be topped with a huge outdoor social space which will include gardens, gazebos, pools & hot tubs, a running track and a fire pit.
Aqua Tower has been designed using many green features. The building will seek LEED certification. Green features include:
- Balconies strategically designed to maximize solar shading
- The largest green roof in Chicago
- Rainwater collection system
- Energy efficient lighting throughout
Aqua Tower is the largest project ever awarded to an American architectural firm led by a woman. Jeanne Gang explains that density is key towards sustainability, that is why she is choosing to build up instead of out. Residents will be closer to work and play, dramatically reducing the impact that transportation has on the environment. Nearby the building there is a new 6 acre park and multiple gardens which will be added.
Homes:
There are 264 condos at Aqua that range from studios with under 600 square feet to 4 bedrooms with over 2000 square feet. All units feature beautiful views of the Chicago Skyline or Lake Michigan. Transportation:
Getting around from Aqua Tower is easy. The East Lakeshore location has easy access to Lake Shore Drive and several highways. Dozens of bus and elevated trains are within a few blocks of the building. The museum campus, Millennium Park, Magnificent Mile, theater district, and restaurants are all within easy reach.
