Overview
The Concept
Independence Station is truly one of the most unique buildings being constructed in the world. With their goal of being powered primarily by an enormous grid of solar panels and waste vegetable oil, the development looks to make as little impact on the power grid as possible. When completed, Independence Station hopes to be the highest-scoring LEED building in the world!
The location of the building is purposeful. The developers want to construct the project for consumers who are interested in living outside the nearby large urban centers. They feel that the location will allow residents to create a greater sense of community and pride in their development. Independence Station is fifteen minutes from Salem, and about one hour from Portland.
The Building
Independence Station is a four-story new construction development being built out of recycled and reclaimed materials. The building will consist of a mixture of condominiums and high-tech office and retail space. The roof features dozens of huge solar panels and a rain water collection system. Windows are designed to optimize sunlight during the daytime, becoming a passive solar system.
The Homes
Independence Station states that residents will save over 70% on energy costs and reduce fossil fuel consumption to near zero. All units will feature radiant floor heating and cooling and high-speed wireless connectivity. Square footage varies between 600 and 1660 feet. Units will feature fireplaces, central vacuums and food composters which will eliminate ten tons of landfill diversion every year.
