leafOverview

Located in beautiful Salem, Oregon, is Pringle Creek, an approximately 130-home development which has the nation abuzz due to all of the strides it has made to be green. Pringle Creek is focused on a set of six overlying principals:

  • Build efficiencies by building green
  • Celebrate the natural environment
  • Encourage social diversity
  • Activate the local economy
  • Conserve and reuse natural materials
  • Smart transportation and movement

The community is located on 32 acres of natural woodland on which 80% of the trees were saved during development due to careful planning. Nearly one-third of the property is dedicated open green space. The community features many walking paths and gardens to encourage neighbors to socialize and explore. All homes are located within walking distance to the bus stop and there is a plan for an eventual street car stop as well.

One of the most recognized features of Pringle Creek is their commitment to preventing harmful storm water runoff into the local river system. To accomplish this, the community has created porous streets and sidewalks, allowing rain water to travel through the paving into the surrounding soil, preventing 90% of harmful runoff. This is likely the largest project in the United States to use porous paving. In other areas of the community, excess rainwater is captured and stored for use on the community gardens and green space.

The homes are equally green with some of the single family homes planned for "zero-net" energy consumption. Along with single family homes, the community will also feature condominiums and row homes.

Some of the most impressive design features include:
  • Optional geothermal heating and cooling systems
  • Optional solar panels
  • Every home will exceed Energy Star and Earth Advantage standards

The owners of Pringle Creek also go beyond just using green materials and finishes in their homes. They are dedicated to bettering the surrounding economy by using local developers, architects, contractors, builders and tradesmen.

Recognizing the importance of encouraging diversity in the neighborhood, Pringle Creek will contain homes built for families with a wide variety of incomes.
