The Concept
Issaquah Highlands is an urban village which a serious dedication towards encouraging a green lifestyle. The community has adopted a set of 9 guiding principals that vary from the tangible like creating a pedestrian friendly design, to the more spiritual like promoting vitality, flexibility, and collaboration among residents.   The concept seems to be working, as families have been moving here for nearly 15 years now and there are more coming every week.   The development is widely considered the most successful community in the Northwest.

The park and trail system is notable, with over 1,400 acres of parks and open space and trails leading throughout the community and connecting to the nearby regional trails. Other green features within the community include:
  • Clean storm water is routed to recharge wetlands
  • The use of indigenous and drought tolerant plants

Issaquah Highlands offers plenty of amenities like a great elementary school, a large community center a town hall where residents can gather.   There are restaurants and retail throughout he community and a new shopping center is currently in the planning stages.

Sustainability in the community seems to be focused as much on getting people outside and enjoying nature as it does making the homes efficient.

The Homes
Issaquah Highlands offers condos, townhomes, single family homes, and large estates on 2+ acres. When finished there will be 3,250 dwellings in the community. Single family residents can choose their lot and their own builder and architect in order to build their homes to their exact preferences.

Currently Issaquah Highlands is constructing the first zero-energy neighborhood of townhomes in the country.   The homes will produce more energy in a given year than they will use. Some neat features include:
  • Using rainwater and efficient fixtures to use 60% less water every year
  • Achieving zero carbon emissions through energy efficient construction and solar panels
  • Diverting 90% of construction related debris through recycling, reuse and waste prevention.

All homes must meet the Built Green™ 4 Star energy standard. The community features 17 furnished homes for touring.

Getting Around
Outside of the community most residents travel via automobile. I-90 is located near the community. Downtown Seattle is less than 30 minutes to the west and 30 Minutes to the east is The Summit at Snoqualmie, a ski hill with over 1100 acres of slopes.
